On this day, Sonic the Hedgehog was released for the very first time in North America on the Sega Genesis. Let's wish the lil blue dude a Way Past Cool birthday!
Happy Birthday Sonic!   

On another note, it appears as if Sega of Japan did not like the stance for Sonic depicted on the box art for North America. This recently has been brought up again by Yasushi Yamaguchi aka Judy Totoya for unknown reasons... But Naoto Ohshima, respectfully, had this to say about the great and late Greg Martin: "I never met him in person, but I knew of his illustration work. And I was able to know of him passing away thanks to this interview. I feel very sorry for it. I pray for his happiness in the afterlife." and "The culture is different between the United States and Japan. I think what Greg did was supplementary for us. The way he drew Sonic's bowed legs has influenced my own style."

An early sprite of Miles "Tails" Prower for Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has been found in SEGA & DiC's design documents. The fur palette for the sprite is seen as being a darker shade of orange, or brown. This appears to be the reasoning beyond the color choice for the character seen in the cartoons.
